Mahia Golf Club

Hawke's Bay Te Matau-a-Māui

Nestled just back from the sun‑drenched shores of Mahia Peninsula, Mahia Golf Club is a dreamy nine‑hole seaside links experience that blends rustic charm with unspoiled coastal beauty. Stretching across dunes and tussock, the course offers a par‑36 layout that measures just under 3,000 metres from the back tees. Elevated tees frame sweeping fairways, subtle dog‑legs, and clever greens that chase sunlight and ocean breeze in equal measure. Holes have evocative names—like “Kaiwaitau” and “Moumoukai”—that echo the land’s Māori heritage, while dramatic features like the bunkerless hollows add a playful, natural twist to your strategy.

But Mahia isn’t just about the golf—it’s about connection. Formed in the mid‑1970s by locals and lovingly reshaped in the 1980s, the course has always embraced volunteer energy and community spirit. The modest clubhouse perches right on the beachfront, with sweeping views of the Pacific and room to park a couple of campervans. After your round, it’s easy to linger, towel‑dry off, and enjoy a drink while absorbing the vast, unspoilt landscape.

Venture beyond the fairways, and Mahia’s magic becomes even more apparent. The peninsula—legend holds it was Māui’s fish‑hook from Māori lore—offers pristine beaches perfect for surf, swim, or stroll, and there are scenic reserves and Rock Pools to explore. Nearby Black’s Beach is a surf haven, Mokotahi Hill offers panoramic views, and the area buzzes with seasonal activities like fishing, diving, and kayaking. A short drive brings you to Morere Hot Springs, a soothing treat after a breezy round.

Mahia Golf Club was even recognized as one of the world’s top fifty nine‑hole courses, thanks to its unforgettable coastal setting and playful, natural design. Play between dawn and early morning, and you might find yourself alone with the sunrise and surf as companions. In short, Mahia offers a half‑day of golf that’s as soul‑refreshing as it is refreshing on the scorecard—a beautifully simple, quietly stunning escape on New Zealand’s east coast.
