TOP 100 COURSES IN THE WORLD!
Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club, affectionately known as “Paraparam” or “Pram” by locals, is one of New Zealand’s premier links-style golf courses. Designed in 1949 by Sir Alex Russell and sitting a short drive from Wellington, it lays claim to having hosted 12 New Zealand Opens—making it the most enduring Open venue in the country. Legends like Gary Player, Peter Thomson and Tiger Woods have walked its undulating fairways, a testament to its enduring quality and reputation.
Set on true sandy links terrain just inland from the coast, Paraparaumu Beach offers raw, windswept golf where strategy, precision, and creativity are essential. Expect a clever routing: start internally and wind outward before returning through the dunes, with strategic pot bunkers, rolling fairways, and firm, fast greens. Signature holes include the challenging par‑4 17th, with tiered fairways offering multiple lines, and the par‑3 5th, perched on a plateau with dramatic run-off. Taken together, they reward thoughtful play and respect for links nuance.
The clubhouse reflects the club's proud heritage: warm, welcoming, and steeped in tradition. Post-round, golfers gather to share stories and enjoy refreshments via the “sundowner” deck overlooking the 18th green. Club culture is inclusive—visitors, juniors, and social groups are embraced, alongside corporate and competitive events. Sustainability is also a priority: recent efforts have seen wetlands restored, invasive trees removed, and native grasses encouraged, earning national environmental recognition.
Beyond golf, the Kapiti Coast enhances the experience. Just minutes from pristine sandy beaches, coastal town centres, a craft brewery, and the ferry to Kapiti Island's bird sanctuary, it’s easy to extend your visit. Families in the area often praise its kid‑friendly vibe, scenic walking trails, markets, and cafes—Reddit users describe it as “coast life is awesome…people are super friendly” and “like being on holiday all year”. Whether you're teeing off or exploring the coast, the area's charm and tranquility are undeniable.
In summary, Paraparaumu Beach represents links golf at its purest—a major championship pedigree, breathtaking coastal time, thoughtful design, and a vibrant yet relaxed community atmosphere. This isn’t just a round—it’s a journey through New Zealand’s golfing soul, framed by natural shades, salty air, and storied fairways. Make sure it’s on your bucket list.
