Royal Wellington Golf Club
Wellington Te Whanga-nui-a-Tara
Royal Wellington Golf Club, nestled in the lush valley of Upper Hutt just north of Wellington, is one of New Zealand’s most prestigious and scenic parkland courses. Originally founded in 1895 and granted royal status in 2004, it boasts a rich legacy of tournament golf, having hosted seven New Zealand Opens and numerous major amateur championships. The club features two distinct layouts: the championship‑level 18‑hole Heretaunga Course—completely redesigned in 2013 by Turner and MacPherson—and the more accessible nine‑hole Terrace Course. The fairways wind through native podocarp forest, alongside the Hutt River and meandering streams, offering elegant strategic play, excellent conditioning, and striking natural beauty.
The Heretaunga layout is a brilliantly balanced test, stretching over 6,600 m with a par of 72. Signature holes include the risk-reward par‑5 4th (with a split fairway and lakeside approach), the creek-guarded par‑3 8th, the sculpted green of the 14th, and the picturesque par‑5 18th that finishes in front of the clubhouse. Multiple tee options ensure the course is playable yet challenging for golfers of all levels. It also features world-class practice facilities, including a driving range, short-game areas, and excellent cart and club rental services.
The clubhouse embodies understated elegance—freshly renovated with modern dining spaces, a cozy bar overlooking the greens, and warm hospitality for members, families, and visiting golfers. Beyond its golfing appeal, the club is highly inclusive, offering strong junior programmes, women’s sections, and social events. It also fields players at national levels, and offers access to tennis courts, swimming pool, and annual community initiatives such as pest‑control and sustainability projects (including GEO certification).
The Upper Hutt location provides a perfect blend of nature and accessibility—just a 25‑minute drive from Wellington city and airport. The surrounding area is full of charm: the rugged national park ranges, trout fishing in the Hutt River, epic mountain biking and walking tracks, plus Wellington’s vibrant dining, arts, and café scene within reach. That blend of championship-level golf, stunning scenery, community spirit, and convenient location makes Royal Wellington a must-play destination on any golf itinerary.
