Shandon Golf Club

Wellington Te Whanga-nui-a-Tara

Shandon Golf Club, nestled in leafy Petone just minutes from central Wellington, is a handsome 18‑hole parkland course renowned for its treelined fairways, immaculate conditioning, and fast, sloping greens. With a par‑70 playing just over 6,100 yards from the tips, it delivers a satisfying test: straight drives are rewarded, but approach shots and green reads are what set apart good scores. The well-drained sandy soil keeps playability high throughout the year—even after heavy rain—while the Hutt River and nearby coast impart a gentle breeziness and fresh ambience.

What makes Shandon shine is its blend of community spirit and pedigree. Founded in 1927, it has hosted numerous national-level tournaments and boasts a thriving junior academy led by accredited PGA professionals. Over the years the club has produced standout talents such as Marilyn Smith (New Zealand’s first LPGA Tour player), Matthew Lane (1998 NZ Open champion), NZ Amateur winner Andrew Green, and Mark Brown, who famously shot a 59 and won on the European tour. All this pedigree sits alongside a warm, inclusive environment—casual players, juniors, and social members are equally well catered for.

The clubhouse buzzes with activity: recent renovations include a refreshed café-bar overlooking the course and elegant function spaces. Cart and club hire are available, along with a well-stocked pro shop and practice facilities. Club days, twilight scrambles, and interclub matches are regular fixtures, giving both locals and visitors reasons to return again and again.

Beyond golf, Petone and the Hutt Valley offer history, natural beauty, and cultural richness. After your round, you can explore scenic river trails, stroll the vintage waterfront precinct, check out artisan cafés and shops, or enjoy a meal at one of the local eateries. Shandon’s combination of quality golf, player development, social warmth, and city-adjacent convenience make it an outstanding destination—whether you’re boosting your game, enjoying a fun afternoon round, or seeking a socially rich golfing escape.
