Eketahuna
Manawatū-Whanganui
Eketahuna Golf Club, also known as the Mākākahi Course, celebrated its centennial year in 2010, marking over a century of golf being played in the area since 1910. The club has a strong community feel, with Sunday club day teeing off from 12 noon and visitors always welcome. Ladies’ Day is held every Tuesday from 10.00am, while twilight golf runs through the summer months each Wednesday evening from 4.30pm, making great use of the long daylight hours.
Located right on State Highway 2, the course is an ideal stop for a relaxed and scenic round if you’re travelling through the Wairarapa. The town of Eketahuna is well known for its kiwi population and offers a few handy cafés for a break before or after your round. The course itself sits at the base of dramatic cliffs, creating a grand and peaceful setting that feels a world away from the road.
The front nine features more open, tree-lined holes, while the back nine weaves further into the trees, using the natural landscape to carve out some excellent holes that reward accurate shot-making. With 18 holes and an enjoyable, walkable layout, the course is generally quiet, very accessible, and great value at just $35 a round. It’s a laid-back, scenic place to enjoy golf in a classic rural New Zealand setting.

Condition
Eketahuna Golf Club is run by volunteers, with sheep grazing the fairways as part of the course’s character. The course is generally in good condition throughout the year, although it can become wet during the winter months. Greens are usually in good shape and roll well for a country course. At thirty five dollars, the overall condition provides an enjoyable and fair golfing experience for the price.
Challenge
The course plays quite tight throughout, with trees lining most fairways and a number of sweeping doglegs that keep you thinking off the tee. There is some elevation change, although it is generally a fairly flat layout overall. It provides a fun and engaging test that suits golfers of all ability levels without being overly punishing.
Facilities
The course offers a full 18 holes along with a clubhouse that is open on club days. There is a putting green available and a small area to hit a few balls before your round. Payment is easy, with an honesty box on site as well as online payment options available.
Value for Money
At $35, this course represents solid value for money. You get a full 18 holes in a peaceful rural setting, with a layout that is enjoyable and challenging enough to stay interesting. While it is a volunteer-run course and can be a little softer in winter, the overall experience is relaxed, affordable, and well worth the green fee for anyone passing through or looking for an easygoing country round.
