Opotiki Golf Club
Bay of Plenty - Te Moana-a-Toi
Ōpōtiki Golf Club is a picturesque and welcoming course overlooking the township and the Eastern Bay of Plenty coastline, with views stretching out toward the ocean and White Island on a clear day. Founded in 1918, the club began life as a modest 9-hole layout before steadily evolving into the 18-hole par 70 course enjoyed today. Its gently rolling hillside setting gives the course a park-like feel, framed by mature trees and plantings that add both beauty and challenge throughout the round.
Over the first fifty years, the foundations of the current course were established through additional land purchases, new greens, extensive tree planting, and the construction of the clubhouse. Continued development through the following decades saw major improvements including irrigation systems for the greens, clubhouse upgrades, sealed parking, and investment in machinery that lifted course presentation. Signature holes such as the par-5 14th, aptly named The Wrecker, and the testing 6th hole highlight the thoughtful design and evolution of the layout, offering genuine risk-and-reward moments even for strong players.
The club’s success has always been built on the dedication of its members, volunteers, and greenkeepers, whose commitment is reflected in the consistently well-presented course. Today, Ōpōtiki Golf Club offers pressure-free golf for players of all abilities, excellent facilities, and a friendly atmosphere that welcomes both affiliated and casual golfers. Whether you’re passing through the Eastern Bay or making a trip specifically to play, it’s a course rich in history, scenery, and character that is well worth experiencing.

Condition
Ōpōtiki Golf Club is run solely by volunteers, and the standard they achieve is impressive. When we visited in November the course was in excellent condition, with neatly cut fairways and greens maintained to a very high standard. Tee boxes had strong grass coverage, and the attention to detail across the course really stood out, from well-presented playing surfaces to clean, well-maintained signage throughout.
Challenge
The course is not overly tough, but it is cleverly designed and very enjoyable to play. Gentle doglegs, a good variety of green complexes, and excellent use of the natural movement of the land keep the layout interesting throughout the round. It remains very playable for all golfers while still making the more experienced player think about positioning and shot selection. The standout challenge is the par 5 14th, known as The Wrecker, a tight and narrow hole with a green perched on the side of a hill. Walk away with a par here and you will be very happy.
Facilities
Ōpōtiki Golf Club has a welcoming clubhouse that is open most days, though hours are limited. The club offers a full 18 hole course along with a short practice area for warming up or working on your short game. The restaurant is open every Friday evening from 5.30 to 8.30, making it a great spot to relax and enjoy a meal after your round.
Value for Money
At $40 for affiliated players and $50 for non affiliated players, Ōpōtiki Golf Club offers incredible value. For a course set in such a beautiful location and maintained to a high standard, the pricing is very reasonable. It is generally quiet, easy to get a game, and provides a relaxed and enjoyable round that you are sure to appreciate.
