Arikikapakapa Golf Club

Waikato

Rotorua Golf Club, also known as Arikikapakapa, is New Zealand’s only geothermal golf course, situated in the heart of Rotorua. The name "Arikikapakapa" is of Māori origin, meaning "the gentle sound of plopping mud," a reference to the bubbling geothermal features that surround and even intersect parts of the course. This unique dual identity reflects both its cultural heritage and its natural environment, making it a standout destination for golfers in Aotearoa.

The course itself is an 18-hole, par 70 layout that offers a truly distinctive playing experience. Hot thermal vents, steaming pools, and sulphur-laden air add a dramatic flair, challenging players with both visual distraction and unusual terrain. Established in the early 20th century, Rotorua Golf Club has evolved into a well-maintained and welcoming club for locals and visitors alike, hosting numerous tournaments including regional and national events.

Beyond the game, Rotorua Golf Club emphasizes hospitality and community, offering a fully-equipped clubhouse, practice facilities, and coaching services. Its central location near Rotorua’s tourist attractions, such as Te Puia and the Polynesian Spa, makes it a popular stop for golfers exploring the region. Whether you're drawn by the geothermal novelty or the quality of play, Arikikapakapa is a memorable golfing experience in one of New Zealand’s most fascinating landscapes.

Condition

The course is kept in good condition year-round, with fairways generally firm and running well. The greens roll true and are well looked after, though the real point of difference here is the geothermal ground — certain areas stay warm and dry even in winter, which makes it quite unique. You’ll notice steam vents and hot ground dotted around, giving the course character while still being very playable.

Challenge

This is a course that mixes fun with test. Fairways are fairly generous but the layout has doglegs, bunkering, and water hazards that can catch you out. The geothermal features add to the experience but also influence how you play certain holes. It’s not brutally hard, but it does make you think your way around and rewards good ball striking.

Facilities

The club is well set up with a full clubhouse, pro shop, and practice facilities including a driving range and putting/chipping greens. It’s an easy place to base yourself for a full day of golf and relaxation, with the geothermal setting making it a pretty special place to unwind before or after your round.

Value for Money

At around $70 a round, it’s great value for the quality and uniqueness on offer. You’re not just playing a well-kept course — you’re playing one of the most unique golfing landscapes in New Zealand. For both locals and visitors, it’s a must-play and well worth the green fee.
