Castlepoint Golf Club

Wellington Te Whanga-nui-a-Tara

Castlepoint Golf Club sits in one of the most picturesque spots on the Wairarapa coast, right beside the beach and just a short stroll from the iconic Castlepoint lighthouse. The setting is rugged and beautiful, with the course weaving through sandy land that gives it a natural, links-like feel. From several holes you can look out across the bay and headland, making it as much a scenic walk as it is a round of golf.

The course itself is volunteer run and proudly rustic, with fairways kept longer to protect them and small, simple greens that roll well enough for a true country experience. Sheep graze parts of the land, adding to the charm, and the wind off the sea can quickly raise the difficulty level. It’s a course where the elements play just as big a role as the layout, and that’s what makes it memorable.

After golf, the local hotel sits right next door, offering an easy place to relax with a meal or drink while taking in the view. The clubhouse itself is open on club days and has a friendly, community feel, reflecting the down-to-earth nature of the course. Castlepoint isn’t polished or flashy, but it’s full of character — a place where the scenery and seaside atmosphere make the round truly special.

Condition

This is a volunteer-maintained course and it shows its rustic side. Fairways are kept a little longer to protect them, the greens are basic but roll true enough, and sheep help keep the rough down in parts. It’s not polished, but it’s playable and fits the rugged, seaside setting perfectly.

Challenge

The real challenge here comes from the natural elements. Coastal breezes can turn a simple hole into a tricky one, and the undulating fairways and small greens demand good shot-making. There are some cracking short par 3s and doglegs that keep you guessing, and you’re never too far from trouble if you wander offline.

Facilities

The clubhouse opens on club days, offering a casual, friendly spot to meet the locals. It’s simple but welcoming, with the history of the club reflected in the community atmosphere. There aren’t many extras beyond the course itself — no driving range or practice nets — but that’s part of the charm.

Value for Money

At just $20 a round, Castlepoint delivers a fun, unique golf experience in one of New Zealand’s most scenic coastal locations. It won’t compete with the polished resort courses, but if you enjoy laid-back golf with stunning views and a community feel, it’s money well spent.
