Lake Rotoiti Golf Club
Bay of Plenty Te Moana-a-Toi
Lake Rotoiti Golf Club is a hidden gem tucked away on the northeastern shore of Lake Rotoiti, about 20 minutes from Rotorua along State Highway 30. Set among lush native bush and overlooking the lake, this scenic course was originally known as Moose Lodge Golf Resort. The site has a rich history and old-world charm, with the original Moose Lodge still standing nearby, now serving as part of a private estate with accommodation and function space. Built in 1997, the course began as a private 9-hole layout and has since expanded into a full 18-hole course using alternate tees, offering a relaxed and peaceful golfing experience surrounded by nature.
The course itself is a par 71, measuring just under 6,000 yards, and welcomes both casual and serious golfers. It’s relatively flat and easy to walk, with a laid-back atmosphere—no strict dress code, and carts or pull-trolleys available for hire. One of the most intriguing features is the ‘hidden house’ nestled near the course, a character-filled lodge that adds to the estate’s mystique. The entire property feels secluded and tranquil, ideal for a quiet round away from busy urban clubs. While the course is generally open most days throughout the year, it’s strongly advised to call ahead before making the journey, as opening times can vary depending on the season or weather.

Condition
Lake Rotoiti is maintained to a high standard year-round by a dedicated team of two greenkeepers (as of May 2025). The fairways are well presented, and the greens roll smooth and true, offering reliable pace and quality. Bunkers are regularly raked and prepared, and overall, the course is kept in very tidy shape, making it one of the better-conditioned country courses in the region.
Challenge
Lake Rotoiti offers a balanced test for golfers of all abilities. The 10-hole layout begins with a deceptively short opening hole featuring an island-style green surrounded by water — a potential scorecard spoiler right out the gate. The next stretch of holes plays more open and forgiving, but the final loop tightens up significantly, demanding accuracy off the tee. With water hazards, out-of-bounds areas, and the option of back tees for experienced players, it’s a fun and varied challenge that rewards thoughtful shot selection.
Facilities
Lake Rotoiti Golf Club has a modest yet welcoming clubhouse that offers drinks and, at times, light refreshments. While the hidden house on the grounds — once home to high-profile figures — is not open to the public, it adds a sense of intrigue and history to the property. The clubhouse includes memorabilia, toilets, and shower facilities, with a staff member typically on site to assist. Golf carts are available for hire, though there are no camping options available.
Value for Money
At $50, Lake Rotoiti offers great value for what’s on offer. With consistently good course conditions, solid facilities, and the bonus of often having the place nearly to yourself, it delivers a peaceful and memorable experience. It’s well worth the visit — one of our favourite stops and biggest surprises on the journey so far.
