Pahiatua Golf Club
Manawatū-Whanganui
Located between Woodville and Pahiatua on State Highway 2, this charming country course has a long and proud history. The club was first formed in 1904 and moved through several sites before settling in Mangatainoka in 1968, where the original farmhouse was converted into the clubhouse. In 1974 the upstairs lounge was added, giving the club a warm and familiar character that still welcomes golfers today.
Set in peaceful rural farmland, the 18 hole layout is fully tree lined and offers a relaxed and genuine country golf atmosphere. The course is generally well maintained throughout the year, though some lower areas can soften during wet winters. Despite that, the course carries strong local support and has an active membership, with club days that are friendly and open to all visitors.
The layout brings a range of unique challenges. Several doglegs keep you thinking from the tee, a number of greens are well protected by mature trees especially the tricky twelfth, and there are a few blind tee shots that add to the adventure. One of the standout holes is the third, a dramatic ninety degree dogleg left. Long hitters may be tempted to drive the green but danger surrounds it with a creek looping around the back, making it a real risk and reward moment that captures the character of the course.
Facilities are simple but practical, with cart hire available, an honesty box system for green fees, and eftpos on site. Altogether it is a cool and memorable country course with loads of charm. For around thirty dollars it is an absolute treat if you are passing through and want to enjoy a relaxed round in classic rural New Zealand surroundings.

Condition
In the summer months the course is in great condition, with fairways neatly presented and the greens rolling well. During winter it can soften in places if there has been a lot of rain, but it still remains very playable and retains its charm. Overall the club does an excellent job with the resources available, and for thirty dollars the standard of presentation is very good.
Challenge
The course offers plenty of variety with holes that ask you to shape the ball both ways and manage a good range of distances. You will use most clubs in the bag as you work through its mix of shorter strategic holes and longer tests. The par threes in particular are tricky and demand accuracy, and if you can navigate them well you set yourself up for a strong score.
Facilities
The club offers a small own ball range along with driving nets for warming up before your round. The clubhouse opens on club days and provides a welcoming place to relax, with a great view overlooking the eighteenth hole, a challenging par three that makes for an exciting finish. The overall layout of the eighteen hole course is enjoyable and thoughtfully put together, giving players a classic country golf experience with everything they need for a good day out.
Value for Money
For thirty dollars this course offers excellent value. Carts are available with pre booking which adds convenience for visitors. In the summer the course is especially good value with well presented fairways and enjoyable playing conditions. During winter it is worth checking their Facebook page or website for any updates as occasional hole closures can occur after heavy rain. Overall it is a great country course at a really good price and well worth stopping in for a round.
