Taihape Golf Club

Manawatū-Whanganui

Taihape Golf Club is located around 10 minutes out of the main town of Taihape, set in beautiful countryside with open rural views in every direction. The course sits quietly away from the road and town, giving you a proper country golf experience where you can enjoy the scenery and focus on your round. It’s an easy drive out and well worth it once you arrive.

Taihape itself is a town full of character and is well known for its annual gumboot throwing competition, which adds to the charm of the area. The golf club carries that same relaxed country feel, with a welcoming atmosphere and a course that’s never overcrowded. The layout uses the land really well, with elevation changes, tree-lined holes, and plenty of variety to keep things interesting.

One of the standout features of the course is its history. The club is home to a par 3 that was once played by Arnold Palmer, who rated it as the best natural par 3 he ever played. That alone makes it a special place to visit, and when you combine that with the quality of the course, the setting, and the value for money, Taihape Golf Club is a place that quietly delivers a great round of golf.

Condition

Taihape Golf Club was in exceptional condition when we played in December. Despite being largely maintained by volunteers, the course is presented to a very high standard. Fairways and greens are cut to a good, consistent length, with clear definition throughout the course. For a country layout, it’s beautifully looked after and an absolute pleasure to play.

Challenge

Taihape Golf Club offers a rewarding challenge with a mix of tight doglegs, elevation changes, and subtly sloping greens. There is generally plenty of room off the tee, though a handful of tighter holes demand accuracy. The greens roll at a good pace with gentle undulations that keep you guessing, and while there is no deep rough, the mature trees act as the main defence. It’s an engaging test that suits golfers of all abilities.

Facilities

Taihape Golf Club has a welcoming clubhouse that opens on club days and overlooks the course, providing a great spot to relax before or after your round. There is a small putting green out front to warm up on, and carts are available for hire, though it’s best to ring ahead to secure one. Caravan parking is also available in the car park, making it a convenient stop for travellers. Combined with a well-laid-out 18 hole course, the facilities suit both locals and visitors looking for an easygoing country golf experience.

Value for Money

At $30 a round, Taihape Golf Club offers outstanding value. For a relaxed day of golf in beautiful surroundings, it’s an absolute steal at this price. The experience is made even more special by the chance to play a hole once played by Arnold Palmer, who famously rated it as the best natural par 3 he ever played. That alone makes the visit memorable, and when combined with the course quality and setting, it’s hard to beat for the money.
