Windross Farm Golf Club

Auckland - Tāmaki-makau-rau

Windross Farm is one of Auckland’s newest and most thoughtfully designed golf courses, set only thirty minutes from the central city yet surrounded by open countryside and wide skies. The course sits on sixty hectares of former farmland near Ardmore Airport, a peaceful rural pocket that gives the entire property a calm and spacious feel from the moment you arrive. The journey to create Windross was a major chapter in the history of the former Manukau Golf Club. After years of discussion and planning, members voted in December 2012 on whether to sell the old site and build a completely new course. An incredible ninety percent of members placed a vote and eighty four percent supported the move, giving the green light to one of the most significant golf developments in the region.

Architect Brett Thomson of RBT Design was chosen to shape the new course, supported by former PGA Tour winner Phil Tataurangi. With very little natural fall in the land and a history of potato and corn crops and dairy cows, the site needed imagination and hard work to transform it into something special. Thousands of cubic metres of fill were brought in, lakes were created, and the subtle movement of the nearby hillside inspired the soft, rolling contours that now define the course. During construction more than fifty thousand native plants were added, along with raised ridges and natural burns, which combined to create a modern links style landscape full of texture and seasonal contrast.

The playing surfaces were selected with care, aiming for year round quality on every closely mown area. Fairways are wide and clean, the out of play grasses sway in the wind, and the greens and surrounds offer a polished, championship standard finish. The course is known as one of the best all weather layouts in New Zealand thanks to excellent drainage and sand based construction. It is a layout that feels open and inviting but still demands smart shot selection, especially when the prevailing south west breeze starts to move the ball.

A full clubhouse development followed, beginning with a Maori dawn powhiri and the burial of a sacred rock to acknowledge the significance of the project. The completed facilities include an undercover driving range, practice greens, a well stocked golf shop, a spacious hospitality area, and a modern cart barn. On 31 August 2016 the club left its long established home at Takanini, and the very next day members teed off for the first time on their brand new course at Windross Farm.

Condition

The course is maintained to a very high standard year round. The greens roll true in all seasons, and both the fairways and rough are consistently well presented. Multiple teeing grounds on every hole help spread play and reduce wear, ensuring the course stays in top condition throughout the year.

Challenge

The course weaves its way through soft dune like contours that frame each fairway. The fairways are generous, but missing them brings thick long grass into play and makes recovery much harder. The greens are large and beautifully presented with plenty of subtle slope, rewarding good approach play and testing your touch. Closely mown surrounds allow you to putt from off the green which is a real advantage on windy days or when confidence around the greens wavers. A few well placed lakes add variety without overwhelming the experience. Overall the course is great fun for experienced golfers while still giving newer players enough space and forgiveness to enjoy their round.

Facilities

Windross Farm offers outstanding, modern facilities that match the calibre of the course itself. The contemporary clubhouse provides a welcoming space for both golfers and locals, supported by an excellent catering team and comfortable social areas. Practice amenities are first class, with a large putting green, two dedicated chipping greens, and a fully equipped driving range featuring Toptracer technology. The pro shop is well stocked with everything you need before heading out, completing a premium experience from the moment you arrive.

Value for Money

Despite Auckland’s generally higher green fee prices, Windross Farm still represents very good value for the experience it delivers. You won’t be disappointed with your day here – the course is immaculately presented, the facilities are top class, and the overall environment feels premium from the moment you arrive. It’s well worth turning up a little early to make the most of the practice areas and enjoy the clubhouse before heading out. The challenge the course presents, paired with its quality and atmosphere, makes the investment more than worthwhile and leaves you wanting to return.
